Apple wowed the industry with its M1 chip MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini last fall. Now we’re waiting for an even more exciting series of professional hardware with the supposed updates to the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Here’s everything we know so far.
Ports galore!
When Apple redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2016, it all went over USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 and literally replaced all I / O with these ports. Different models included 1, 2 and 4 USB-C ports for charging, data transfer and the use of dongles to adapt the new ports to more convenient I / O like SD card readers, HDMI and USB-A .
Five years later, Apple should give business users what they’ve been asking for since the 2016 MacBook Pro: more ports! The redesigned MacBook Pro is currently expected to retain USB-C ports for Thunderbolt 3, but revive MagSafe charging, HDMI, and a built-in SD card reader. If this is true, that would free up all Thunderbolt 3 ports for fast data transfer and eliminate the need for essential adapters that MacBook Pro users currently rely on.
The new machines are also expected to feature a full keyboard and no touch bars like the MacBook Air.
Did you say 14 inches?
Ah, yes, the 14-inch revision of the MacBook Pro line. Apple has slightly modified the display and body of the 15.4in MacBook Pro to create a 16in version in the latest revision. Rumors have since been circulating about a natural update to the 13.3in MacBook Pro that would reduce the bezels around the screen and increase the screen area to 14in. Unlike the 16-inch MacBook Pro, this never happened in the Intel era, but it’s quite on the table for a new version of the Apple Silicon chip.
Speaking of screens …
A 0.7-inch increase isn’t the only screen change announced for the next MacBook Pro review. Apple is rumored to be planning display type changes for new Mac laptops for the first time in years. Both models currently use high-resolution LED-backlit LCD displays with IPS technology, or in-plane switching. Supply chain reports indicate that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro displays will be the first Apple laptops to switch to new mini-LED technology.
The mini LED is exactly what it looks like. Smaller LED components are used for the backlight. This means that the lighting of bright pixels and the gradation of dark areas can be much more precise. In turn, this allows for higher contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and generally less halo effects.
A new style
Apple has avoided introducing new models in the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and MacBook Air (in addition to removing its fan) for the first series of Apple Silicon computers. Several sources expect this to change when the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro updates drop. Our best rumored description so far is something closer to the current design of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPhone 12. Hard right angles are expected to be remain, but the lids and bulbous bottoms should flatten out to create an even depth.
There’s a lot to be expected in the next round of MacBook Pro updates. A noticeable increase in screen size on the smaller model, more ports for both models, a new type of display for an increased contrast ratio and a refreshed design for the first times since 2016, these should be a crowd-pleaser – unless your heart is set on Face ID and built-in cellular. These two features don’t appear to be in the cards for 2021.
Still, that’s before we mention Intel’s move to Apple Silicon for the first time on the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Based on the performance and battery life of current M1 chip computers, any further performance improvement from a successor chip is sure to impress. As for timing, rumors point to the second half of this year for announcements and product availability.
