It’s day 11 of the Jets head coach search.
So, let’s see where they are – and what’s next.
Here’s what happened on Wednesday …
–Jets general manager Joe Douglas welcomed 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for a second interview. Saleh was the first Jets finalist to sit down for a follow-up in-person interview with Douglas, after nine video chat interviews in the first phase of this research. But Saleh left without an agreement to take the job. His next stop – Philadelphia, to meet with the Eagles about their work as head coach.
–Douglas also did another follow-up in-person interview on Wednesday with Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Like Saleh, he is a sought-after candidate. He has the interest of the seven teams in need of coaches. (Saleh has an interest of six, the Texans being the exception.) And like Saleh, Smith has to meet the Eagles after the Jets.
– So what’s next? Well, Saleh and Smith can be hired right away because they’re not in the playoffs. Smith this week has already had a second interview with the Falcons, as well as the Jets follow-up. He is expected to have a second interview with the Lions on Friday, after meeting the Eagles for the first time on Thursday, according to to the NFL network.
– Not only can playoff coaches not be hired immediately, they also can’t sit down for in-person interviews. Which is a distinct advantage for guys like Saleh and Smith.
Keep it here Thursday for all live updates, news and rumors about this research, as interim owner Christopher Johnson (wisely) steps aside and lets Douglas do his job – leading the research.
Jets finalist Robert Saleh will meet the Chargers again:
The Jets completed their second follow-up interview on Thursday with a runner-up – Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who has plenty of other interests, as noted below:
Urban Meyer should join Jaguars:
The first domino fell in the 2021 NFL head coach recruiting cycle. The Jaguars were the only team to pursue Meyer, but they were also interested in the two finalists for the Jets – Robert Saleh and Arthur Smith. Now neither will go to Jacksonville.
Arthur Smith plans to do his four in-person interviews this week:
The Jets finalist still meets them Thursday morning. He’s already sat down with the Falcons. Then the Eagles later Thursday, then the Lions on Friday.
Smith intends to complete these four interviews in person before making a decision, according to NFL Network.
Another interview for Jets nominee Brandon Staley, who also spoke to Chargers:
With Meyer heading to Jacksonville, six of the seven vacant NFL head coach positions remain vacant – Jets, Eagles, Falcons, Texans, Lions and Chargers.
The Texans have hired Nick Caserio from the Patriots to be their next general manager. And the Lions have hired Brad Holmes from the Rams to fill that role for them. But the Jaguars and Falcons still have vacancies at GM. Terry Fontenot of the Saints is Atlanta’s favorite. And Meyer could double as general manager in Jacksonville, although it’s not clear if he will.
Here are the nine known candidates of the Jets, along with other interests they received:
