Ewers, teammates lose victory, fall in state championship game

2022 Ohio State quarterback engagement Quinn Ewers and his Southlake, Texas teammates Southlake Carroll lost a victory from their 2020-21 season goal, losing to Austin (Texas) Westlake in the 6A 52-34 Texas State Championship game on Saturday night. It was the second consecutive state championship for Westlake.

The night got off to a spectacular start as Ewers put in 4 of 5 for 58 yards, then 3 of 3 in their next practice, including a 49-yard touchdown pass as Southlake Carroll had a 14-7 lead. Ewers had thrown 130 yards by then.

However, whenever Southlake Carroll has scored, Westlake has also scored. Westlake then took a 21-14 lead early in the second quarter. Ewers and his teammates returned to tie the game at 21 before Westlake scored with 1:12 left at the half and took a 28-21 lead in the locker room at the half.

Westlake, who scored on his four possessions in the first half, drove 75 yards to open the second half and scored on a 4-yard run to make it 35-21. Ewers was then hit while throwing and was intercepted for the second time. Westlake called with another touchdown to take a 42-21 lead.

Finally at the end of the third quarter, Southlake Carroll kept Westlake out of the end zone on a try-out possession, which was good for Westlake’s 45-21 lead. Westlake added another touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 52-21 lead before Ewers connected for a 10-yard touchdown pass to narrow the lead to 52-27 with 4:21 left in the game.

After recovering from a side kick, Southlake Carroll scored again, this time in a short run to bring the score 52-34 at Westlake with 3:14 to go. But that ended the night’s scoreline and Westlake came home with a 52-34 win and another 6A State Championship.

Ewers completed 23 of 39 passes for 352 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Westlake was led by his talented 2022 quarterback class Cade Klubnik who completed 18 of 20 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 97 yards and two scores. Klubnik has more than two dozen scholarship offerings, including Texas, Auburn, TCU, North Carolina, LSU, and Georgia.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Ewers are a 5-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite and 247Sports rankings. He is the nation’s No. 1 pro-style quarterback and No. 1 overall.

Ewers is part of a spectacular recruiting class of 2022 that also includes the No. 1 prospect in Ohio and the No. 2 outside linebacker in the country Gabe Powers, 5 stars in a wide receiver Caleb burton of Texas, No. 1 prospect in Kansas state linebacker Dasan mccullough, Ohio’s No.2 in linebacker CJ Hicks, Buckeyes No.4 in offensive lineman Tegra Tshabola, Ohio’s fifth cornerback prospect Jyaire brown, and two upper tight end targets in Bennett Christian from Georgia and Benji gosnell from North Carolina.
