Ex-detective Pat Diaz denounces the handling of the Gabby Petito case

A former Florida homicide detective has slammed police for failing to secure warrants to search Brian Laundrie’s home and electronics the day his girlfriend Gabby Petito went missing.

Pat Diaz, a former Miami-Dade homicide detective, told Fox News North Port investigators don’t necessarily have to suspect a felony to get warrants in a disappearance case.

“Why would you want [try to] get the guy’s consent and not get a search warrant? Diaz told the media on Sunday. “You can get a search warrant for everything in this house, including his laptop.”

The 35-year-old former detective added that examining Laundrie’s electronic devices would have provided important clues to Petito’s fate before his disappearance – even though no crimes were suspected and her boyfriend remained silent.

But North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor told Fox News his department “does not have the authority to execute a possible federal search warrant on its own.”

He added: “I don’t see how anyone without all the facts in this case can come to a reasonable conclusion and opinion on the matter.”

Taylor added that investigators still had not determined whether a crime even took place and that many details about the case had not been revealed to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

“There is no information that a crime has taken place here in North Port. It’s our jurisdiction, ”he told the point of sale.

Police Chief Todd Garrison said Laundrie, who returned home to North Port on September 1 after making the cross-country trip with Petito, had a constitutional right to refuse to speak to police about the case .

The boyfriend’s parents told authorities on Friday that they had not seen him since Tuesday.

The FBI confirmed on Sunday that the body found in a Wyoming national park is likely that of Petito.

Authorities are still searching for Laundrie (right) after refusing to speak to police and then fleeing her parents' home.

“Saddened and heartbroken to learn that Gabby has been found deceased,” North Port Police said on Twitter. “Our goal from the start, with the FBI and domestic partners, has been to bring her home. We will continue to work with the FBI in the search for more answers. “

Meanwhile, a massive search has been launched for laundry on the 25,000-acre Carlton Preserve near his parents’ home in North Port. The search continued on Sunday until it was suspended for the day shortly before 6 p.m., with no sign of the 23-year-old missing.
