MADISON, WIS. (WMTV) – FDA on Monday Exact Sciences approved master product, a home colorectal cancer screening test for people in their forties. Previously, it was only approved for people aged 50 and over.
This marks the last stage of the rapid expansion of the cancer research society and, as a result, the company is creating hundreds of new jobs.
"Currently, we have more than 500 vacancies," said Scott Larrivee, spokesperson for Exact Sciences. "We have jobs for all high school graduates up to the PhD."
With the company's new lab located in West Madison, the company is looking to fill these positions locally.
"I think there are a lot of people in the community who could qualify for these jobs but may not think of us because we have the name of" science "on our behalf," said Larrivee.
To inform people of new job opportunities and find candidates, Exact Sciences has begun to partner with community groups such as the Urban League of Greater Madison.
"Exact Sciences is helping people from all walks of life become more familiar with the biotechnology industry," said Ruben Anthony, president and CEO of the Urban League.
Together, the two groups set up a six-week vocational training program, helping people with CVs, interviews and more specific skills in the sector.
"Everything has been designed so that when you get to work the first day, you are well prepared," Larrivée said.
More than 30 people have already taken the program and a new class of 25 is already enrolled in the program at the end of September. Many graduates of the program were hired at Exact Sciences shortly thereafter.
"In our last course with Exact Sciences, they hired 100% of the candidates," said Anthony.
Anthony also said that by hiring into the Madison and Dane County community, Exact Sciences encourages the diversity and inclusion of its staff.
"Having a representative company of the community and people can come to work and see other people with whom they work who look like them, it makes a big difference in the world," he said.
For Exact Sciences, having these local employees helps both the company and its customers.
"We are really proud, proud that everything here is local and that you get a personalized touch," Larrivée said.
Exact Sciences is also developing a partnership with Madison College to recruit students and give corporate staff the opportunity to retrain or learn new skills.
