After announcing last week that Johnny Depp would not continue as Gellert Grindelwald after being asked to step down by Warner Bros., a high-ranking source in the production of Fantastic beasts 3 confirmed to MuggleNet that Mads Mikkelsen will indeed take on the role.
Since Depp’s departure was announced, Mikkelsen has reportedly been vying for the role. He is known for his roles in Doctor Strange, Rogue One, and Hannibal and would have been the first choice of the director of the series David Yates.

Filming for the third movie is already underway and it was rumored that Depp had just started shooting the movie when he stepped down, so remaking the scenes with Mikkelsen wouldn’t take too long. However, with the release date of the third Fantastic beasts film postponed to July 15, 2022, production now has more time to complete filming with Mikkelsen.
