Exclusive: The next PS5 and Xbox Series X restock at Best Buy will be in stores on Thursday, according to exclusive sources from PS5 and Xbox restock Twitter tracker Matt Swider, which will send you alerts when the consoles are in stock in the US – if you follow their Twitter account and activate notifications. This is great news. This is the first time in 2021 that a major non-club retailer in the United States has put the PlayStation 5 on sale in shops, and we have proof that it and the Xbox Series X are in stock in Best Buy stores for September 23. Several retailer sources, including those who have shared internal inventory screens with us, expect more than 50 consoles per store.
Here’s how to know when the next PS5 and Xbox restocking will take place:
► When? Follow our Twitter tracker to restock the PS5 and Xbox Matt Swider and turn on notifications for instant replenishment news. This is the fastest way to get PS5 and Xbox stock updates.
► Never buy from other Twitter users – ever. These are all scams. Only buy from stores in the United States that Matt warns you about. No one is going to sell a PS5 or an Xbox for just $ 550.
► How do I get the invitation by e-mail? Sign up for Matt’s Monday newsletter for instructions on how to access the Sony email invitation list. It details the steps each week (Monday morning).
Best Buy hasn’t had a PS5 restock for 38 days – no wonder
The last PS5 restock date at Best Buy was August 12, which is 38 days ago, to Sunday, September 19. This discrepancy came after the retailer had an almost weekly stock of the Sony console, making everyone think Best Buy was restocked every week. It has been selling Microsoft’s Xbox Series X longer and longer if you don’t count the Halo Infinite themed console, the last regular Xbox Series X sale on July 14.
As it turns out, shipments of both consoles started filtering through stores late last week. This is a change from how it worked before: Best Buy would normally keep the PS5 and Xbox in regional warehouses and only ship to stores after online purchases have been made. That’s why customers, after ordering online, picked up their consoles three to five days later from Best Buy stores. There was transit and processing from the time it moved from the warehouse to the store.
This week, with consoles stocked in stores, that bridges the gap, so you won’t have to wait those three to five days for your pickup. If the purchase is made in person, it is more difficult for bots to retrieve inventory for PS5 and Xbox consoles from Best Buy’s vulnerable online ordering system.
How to buy Best Buy’s PS5 and Xbox this week
Best Buy’s ordering system has made it the most frustrating store when trying to buy a next-gen console. His instructions were never clear (“We’re taking everyone one more step” without telling you that the next step is just to wait without refreshing the page. Whoops.). The bots had no problem with this: Reseller bots were able to open multiple windows, dive into the source code of the page, and determine the best page with the lowest secret queue timer to retrieve and pay with hundreds of consoles. The add to cart odds were not in your favor.
So how is it going to work now? Follow the PS5 and Xbox Matt Swider replenishment tracker for the latest updates, because we always hear about how Best Buy is organizing things.
Our sources say this will mimic how Best Buy restocks Nvidia GPU cards three times over the summer. Some Best Buy stores will have PS5, PS5 Digital, and Xbox Series X discs in stock. One of the stores we signed up with had just over 50 PS5 and Xbox Series X discs, and other stores tell us that this appears to be a low number compared to stores in major metropolitan areas.
If Best Buy is following its GPU replenishment process:
- 1. Only after we confirmed the timing on Twitter, lining up outside Best Buy on Thursday morning (Best Buy hasn’t officially announced its plans and may change things at any time – we’re just here to give you the initial information)
- Please do not visit Best Buy stores now. Please do not queue until Best Buy confirms that queuing is the console purchase method.
- 2. Best Buy officials will hand out paper tickets until exhaustion.
- Tickets will be distributed between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time, we are told, before the official opening of the Best Buy store.
- 3. Beware of line jumpers (all resellers) as we saw when Nvidia GPU tickets were distributed in New York.
- 4. Only a certain number of Best Buy stores (think flagship stores) will have inventory, so don’t go to the wrong store (we’ll have a store list by Wednesday).
- 5. Follow Matt Swider who will tweet updates in case plans change
Will Best Buy ship consoles? Can I buy it online?
First, no, Best Buy not ship PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles to your doorstep. That didn’t happen in 2021 at the retailer, and we don’t expect things to change anytime soon. Best Buy already has enough bot issues given its vulnerable ordering system, so not asking people to claim their console would be even more of a problem.
Second, there was talk of a revamped online ordering system to buy the PS5 and Xbox and then claim it in person in stores, but our sources don’t have that information yet, at least not for Thursday, September 23. This is why we ask people to follow Matt Swider for alerts, in case the online system does happen on time, saving you from camping for a PS5 or Xbox for hours.
If Best Buy went this route, it would act more like Target with same-day pickups, which makes sense since the three to five day wait to ship consoles from warehouses would be flattened given that TechRadar can confirm that consoles are in stock in the backrooms of Best Buy stores at this time.
But right now we’re told people will have to queue early in the morning, as many have for Nvidia GPU restockings. If this information changes, we’ll update this article and let you know on Twitter.
Attention Best Buy shoppers: Be careful what you wish for
More resellers and bots, right? That sounds good at first glance, and anyone who is excluded from Best Buy PS5 and Xbox restockings is asking us why they are not being held in person.
Here is the reason: it is not better. Every time we’ve seen a Best Buy GPU restock (remember, there hasn’t been the PS5 and Xbox Series X on sale in stores in 2021, which is why that’s big news. ), it’s pure chaos, as evidenced by our PS5 restocking and Xbox Series X restocking tracker tweet below:
For parts of the United States, things are going well. For others, like New York City, the dealers showed up, set up first, and bought all the inventory – it was also pre-sold on StockX or eBay.
Through our field reports, we identified the first person online who wanted to the coveted RTX 3080 (the most popular graphics card on sale at Best Buy that day) for gaming purposes. They for # 20 online and had a chance.
Moments before the first paper tickets were handed out by Best Buy officials, that online number 20 became online number 40 because of the last line jumpers – the “friends” of people waiting there. ‘front of the line that claimed to have always been there. It turned into a chaotic scene that was not only unfair (11 year old cried) but involved a lot of pushing and shouting.
The profit margins on the PS5 and Xbox Series X are large, but not as large as those on Nvidia GPUs. So we’ll have to see how this Best Buy in-store replenishment goes when it comes to making sure everyone gets the console they want in a fair and safe way.
