Explosions in city in eastern Afghanistan kill three

Several explosions in the eastern city of Jalalabad in Afghanistan have left at least three dead and more than a dozen injured, Reuters reported, citing two sources.

It was not immediately clear who might be the target or who was behind the attack. Jalalabad is located in the province of Nangarhar, where an Islamic State group is said to be active.

“It is too early to say how they carried out the attack,” a Taliban official told The Guardian, who said the group was investigating the nature of the explosions. “We can’t say for sure who might be behind the explosions.”

The deadly explosions come just weeks after a deadly suicide bombing near Kabul airport that killed 13 U.S. service members and injured more than 100 Afghans. ISIS-K, which sees the Taliban as an enemy, claimed responsibility for the attack, taking advantage of an already dangerous security situation as people thronged outside the airport to try to evacuate the country amid the new Taliban regime.

Some in the international community already feared that the environment in Afghanistan would become tumultuous again and could even constitute fertile ground for terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda.

Leon Panetta, who served as defense secretary in the Obama administration, said earlier this month that he had “not seen a good story here” regarding the future of Afghanistan.

“I don’t see a good story here when it comes to Afghanistan. I think the Taliban who take control of Afghanistan are pretty much the same Taliban who controlled Afghanistan on September 11th. And this was pretty much confirmed recently, when they appointed hard-line supporters to their government, people who were in power on September 11, and in addition, appointed Haqqani as interior minister, a global terrorist, really, to be Home Secretary and Head of Homeland Security, ”Panetta told Greta Van Susteren in an interview earlier this month.

“I read, and these actions and the other actions that are being taken to end the protests and really inhibit the rights of women there, that this is a Taliban who will indeed continue to provide a haven for terrorists. , and that creates problems for the United States, ”he added.
