‘Explosive’ Gigabyte power supplies should never have been sold

Following a ton of complaints from disgruntled buyers, Steve Burke and Gamer Nexus have spent the last few months buying and testing a few models of Gigabyte PSUs, to find out why so many of them “explode”.

The two power supplies in question, the GP-P750GM and GP-P850GM, were sold earlier this year by Newegg as part of a forced package, where anyone buying certain RTX series GPUs had to purchase the feeding with it. A crappy move no matter what happened next, but what happened next was people started installing these power supplies and finding out that they were failing. A parcel.

And not just fail, but sometimes fail spectacularly, with reports that a percentage of them were potentially “explosive,” in that they could crash catastrophically at any time, sparking and sometimes burning any hardware connected with it.

In an effort to turn all these anecdotes into something more scientific, Gamer Nexus have since February bought a ton of these units in bulk and tested them, finding that while the P850 is bad, the P750 is criminally poor, with astronomical failure rates – 50% of those they bought! simply arriving dead in the box to explode while testing and taking GTX cards with them.

After taking a close look at the power supplies, they found that they were questionable in terms of the design and components used, and that “Gigabyte and Newegg are finally throwing an unsaleable product at desperate buyers.”
