ANCHORAGE (Alaska) – An Alaskan air carrier involved in two fatal seaplane collisions in a week has voluntarily suspended operations, federal officials said Tuesday.
The stop of tourist flights and commuter flights is in place indefinitely, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
This action comes after the passenger and pilot of a Beaver aircraft operated by Taquan Air were killed when the single-engine crashed into the port of Metlakatla on Monday afternoon during a flight of Regular shuttle connecting Ketchikan.
Taquan Air officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Victims were not identified immediately as their families were warned.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident had occurred during the landing at the base of the seaplanes in the community, said Clint Johnson, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board in Alaska. The NTSB investigators were heading to southeastern Alaska, he said.
Johnson said it was "way too early" to determine a cause.
Monday's crash followed the flying crash of the Taquan Air Beaver Seaplane with another floatplane on May 13th. Six people died in this accident and 10 others were injured. Both aircraft were carrying passengers from cruise ships.
Johnson said the NTSB was investigating the two accidents as separate cases.
