The Federal Aviation Administration says that there is a new problem with some of Boeing's 737 commercial jets. More than 300 aircraft, including some of the Max versions of the ground planes, may have defective parts on their wings.
Although the problem is not considered a potential cause of an accident, Boeing contacts the 737 aircraft owners and the FAA issued an Air Quality Control Order requesting airlines to immediately inspect the aircraft.
Boeing and the FAA claim that some slats located on the wingtip of some 737 could have been manufactured incorrectly by a Boeing supplier and could develop premature cracks.
The FAA said that none of the parts had yet failed, and even a complete failure would not result in the loss of an aircraft – but that could damage an aircraft in flight and the ## 147 ## The agency therefore issues a directive on airworthiness.
In a statement, Boeing said it had identified 21 new generation 737 and 20,737 Max aircraft that appeared to have the defective part, but the company wants 271 additional aircraft checked.
The manufacturing defect is not related to a 737 Max flight control system that has been associated with two recent accidents that claimed the lives of 346 people and stranded all Max aircraft around the world.
Such notices regarding potentially defective parts are not uncommon, but this comes at a time when Boeing and the FAA are increasingly being watched because of Max's problems.
