The 1997 Face / Off movie starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage was a silly but fun action flick about two enemies swapping faces.

Now 24 years later, Hollywood is sequel to the blockbuster.

On Thursday, Deadline shared that director Adam Wingard is picking up the next movie, but he won’t reveal if Travolta and Cage will be part of the follow-up.

When there was talk that the movie could be a remake instead of a sequel, Adam took to Instagram to clarify his thoughts.

“I would never re-imagine or EVER do FACE / OFF again. It’s a perfect action flick, ” he wrote, adding a photo of Cage screaming. “Simon Barrett and I are writing a direct SEQUEL!

Neal Moritz will produce the film for Paramount and Hollywood veteran David Permut will also serve as executive producer.

The first film was a hit with Travolta and Cage, who were still big action stars at the time, playing a game of cat and mouse.

Travolta was FBI agent Sean Archer who intended to hunt down Cage’s crooked terrorist, Castor Troy.

Incredibly, they change their faces, which was laughable at the time, but has since become a possibility.

The film grossed $ 245 million worldwide, making it the 11th highest grossing film of 1997.

Travolta, 66, and Cage, 57, are active in their film careers, so they may be asked to reprise their roles or just make cameos.

John Woo made the first film on a budget of $ 80 million.

It started as a spec script in 1900, then Woo got interested in the project.

The first actors who were chosen to play Sean Archer and Castor Troy were Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger respectively, but they did not stay.

Michael Douglas was also up for the role, but moved on and turned to one of the executive producers.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Harrison Ford were also launched as possible leads.

Travolta has had a difficult 2020. His longtime wife, Kelly Preston, passed away in July after a battle with breast cancer.

And 2020 Christmas was the first actor on Saturday Night Live without actress Jerry Maguire by his side.

In December, the star shared a video featuring her daughter Ella Bleu, 20, and son Benjamin, 10, at their home as he wished his fans a Merry Christmas.

“Say Merry Christmas, Ella! said the pilot. Ella looked pretty in black pajamas as she stood in front of the frosty white Christmas tree while holding her phone.

There were several packages behind her as well as a set of black suitcases. Benjamin was shirtless as he sat in a green chair enjoying a cookie.

“Merry Christmas from the Travolta family! the Face / Off star wrote in her Instagram caption.

Her son Jett, who died in 2009 at the age of 16, was also not featured in the video after suffering a seizure and hitting his head in a bathroom.

Kelly’s passing came as a shock to fans as she kept her health issues a secret.

A family representative told People magazine: ‘On the morning of July 12, 2020, beloved wife and mother Kelly Preston passed away following a two-year battle with breast cancer. ”

“ Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her family and closest friends, ” the family representative said. “ She was a bright, beautiful and loving soul who cared deeply for others and brought everything she touched to life. Her family is asking you to understand their need for privacy at this time.

Travolta and Preston were married for 29 years before her death in July.

“ It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly lost her two year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many people, ” he wrote on Instagram.

John also shared a message on Thanksgiving Day.

John showed off his shaved head and sported a black turtleneck while addressing his three million social media followers.

“I just wanted to take this moment to thank all of you for supporting me in such an incredible way this year,” he said. “Happy Thanksgiving and always loving it.

John’s last film was The Fanatic of 2019.
