Facebook and Instagram were down Thursday afternoon. The outage appeared to start around 5:30 p.m. ET, with several thousand people reporting the outages to DownDetector. The outage is the social media giant’s second in less than a month; an outage on March 19 took its sites offline for several hours. Facebook returned an “Sorry, something went wrong” error message:

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The edge on the cause of the failure; it is not known at this time when the service will be fully restored. Besides WhatsApp and Messenger, the outage also appears to affect Facebook’s internal websites, first noted in a tweet from developer Jane Wong. Even Facebook’s outage dashboard seemed to be in trouble.
