Facebook, Google and Twitter CEOs to Testify to Congress in March

CEOs of several large tech companies will be testifying again before Congress next month, this time to discuss disinformation on their platforms.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey will appear before members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on March 25.

In a statement announcing the rehearing, leaders of the House E&C committee highlighted false allegations about the Covid-19 vaccine and alleged election fraud that has proliferated on social media platforms.

“For too long, big tech failed to recognize the role they played in promoting and disseminating blatantly false information to their online audiences. Industry self-regulation has failed, ”said committee chair Frank Pallone, DN.J., Communications and Technology subcommittee chair Mike Doyle, D-Pa., And chairman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., said in a statement. “We need to start the work of changing the incentives for social media companies to allow and even promote misinformation and disinformation.”

Of the three, Zuckerberg has made the most appearances before Congress in the past year. The March hearing will mark his fourth testimony to Congress since July. For Pichai and Dorsey, this will be their third in this period.

Last year, Zuckerberg and Pichai both appeared before lawmakers for hearings designed to probe their competitive behavior and question the liability shield that protects their industry. Dorsey also appeared at this latest hearing as well as alongside Zuckerberg before another committee over allegations of censorship on their platforms, which they denied.
