A group of states is investigating Facebook for potential violations of competition law, the New York Attorney General's office announced today in a statement.
The investigation is being conducted by Attorney General of New York State, Letitia James, and includes attorneys general from the states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, the United States, and the United States. North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and the District of Columbia.
"Even the largest social media platform in the world must respect the law and respect consumers," James said in a statement. "I am proud to lead a coalition of bipartisan attorneys general to determine if Facebook has stifled competition and put users at risk."
According to the statement, the survey will seek to determine if Facebook "endangers consumer data, reduces the quality of consumer choice or increases the price of advertising."
The survey is the latest puzzle of the social network, which was recently fined $ 5 billion by the Federal Trade Commission. This agency would still be investigating Facebook for other potential legal violations.
At the same time, Big Tech is facing a broader investigation into its power, with the Justice Department also investigating companies such as Facebook and Google for potential violations of competition law. Another group of states is expected to announce a separate Google inquiry next week.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
