A large number of Facebook-owned sites are experiencing a global outage, leaving thousands of users unable to connect.
Facebook, Messenger and Instagram have all had problems since about noon (ET), which has sometimes resulted in a "total blackout".
All three applications have mostly crashed in major urban areas of the United States and Europe, as well as in parts of South America.

Social media users gathered on Twitter to complain about the crash after noticing that Facebook is not only down, but also in Instagram.
More than one-third of Facebook users affected by the outage reported experiencing a "total blackout".
Others said that they could not update the news feed or log on to their accounts. Similar issues appeared on Instagram and Messenger around the same time.
Instagram users have indicated that they are unable to refresh the feed, to log in or to access the office site.
On Messenger, many users could not connect to the server and reported that they were not receiving messages.
Many quickly pointed out that they frequently turned to Twitter to check if other websites were down, pointing out that the platform was still "strong" despite service issues elsewhere.
Others have taken the opportunity to joke about Facebook's recent privacy scandals.
