Facebook is updating its Android and iOS apps to give users more control over location tracking. The company is actively collecting a lot of location data on your phone and is now informing users that data collection is a good measure.
Although nothing changes on iOS, the company introduces a new option on Android that will allow users to prevent Facebook from collecting location data when the app is not in use. Unlike iOS, Android does not have a built-in location tracking feature that allows you to limit apps access to your location only when you use an app. Google is expected to feature similar functionality on Android with this year's Android Q version, but it will probably take a long time for most Android users.
The company is also asking Android and IOS users to check their location settings.
It's nice to see Facebook being a little open about it. The company has faced many privacy controversies in recent times. It is therefore an interesting change of pace for once.
