Facebook portal receives support from WhatsApp and its international launch

At the annual F8 Developer Conference, Facebook announced today that its Portal and Portal Plus video callers will be available soon in Canada and Europe starting this fall. The device will also support WhatsApp calls and all calls will have end-to-end encryption.

The $ 199 portal and the $ 349 largest portal, launched more last year, at a time when consumer confidence in Facebook was weakening after a spate of privacy scandals, and the product was to be delayed by several months as a result of the Cambridge Analytica data breach. Despite this, Facebook said on the scene today that portal sales had exceeded expectations, and it is remarkable that the company is expanding product distribution.

Other features announced today include Superframes, which allow you to view photos from your Facebook feed and Instagram account. This feature is available now and users will be able to add photos from their films via the new Portal mobile app this summer. You will also be able to login via Facebook Live on Portal later this year.

Earlier this month, Facebook confirmed that it was working on a voice assistant for the portal, to better compete with products like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The portal already offers rudimentary voice features, but it will have more visual features and Alexa skills such as flash briefings later this year.
