Facebook revises pages to remove likes and streamline user interface

Facebook is coming out today with a major update to Facebook Pages which includes the removal of “likes”, a whole new layout for the user interface, a dedicated news feed, easier navigation, Updated administration controls for partial or full privileges, new information as well as security and integrity features.

Facebook announced the new Pages experience in a blog post and said the redesign began rolling out today. Here are the key new features / changes:

We’re bringing the power of the News Feed to pages for the first time. Now Pages can discover and join conversations, follow trends, interact with peers, and engage with fans. The dedicated news feed will also suggest new connections – other public figures, pages, groups and trending content that interests a page or public figure.

To make the conversations on the page more visible to a wider audience and appear more frequently in their subscribers’ news feeds, comments from public figures will be placed at the top of the comments section. Users will also be able to follow the pages directly from comments and recommendations.

Another goal is “richer interactive conversations,” so the Pages reboot includes a new text-based question-and-answer format.

More likes

One big change with this update is the removal of likes for Pages. Facebook forwarded this to subscribers:

We’re removing likes and focusing on subscribers to make it easier for people to connect to their favorite pages. Unlike likes, a Page subscribers represent the people who can receive updates from Pages, which helps give public figures a better indication of their fan base.

Admins will likely be happy to see improved management features:

Finally, Facebook says it is using the verified badge to help protect the community while improving its detection of blocked content:

The new pages start rolling out today, but Facebook says they will appear to all users in the “coming months.”
