“This is an important case, and so we will be working as quickly as possible, consistent with the decision of the case in a reasoned and consistent manner,” said Jamal Greene, professor at Columbia Law School and co-chair of the ‘instance at POLITICO. “We will all work hard to decide that as quickly as we can responsibly.”
Public comments will be posted online when the board releases its decision in the Trump case.
The case represents a watershed moment in the limits social media companies can place on elected officials for online posts potentially targeting tens of millions of potential voters. Trump also remains suspended by many other platforms, including Twitter.
Facebook has come under close scrutiny by Republicans over accusations that it and other tech giants censor Tory rhetoric, while Democrats blame the company for not acting quickly enough to crack down on partisan comments of Trump before and during the January 6 riots.
The decision of the Supervisory Board in the Trump case will be binding on Facebook. In its first set of decisions, announced on Thursday, the group spoke out against the company’s decisions to remove online posts in four out of five cases involving issues such as religious prejudice and threats of violence.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former Danish prime minister and another co-chair of the group, told POLITICO not to interpret them as a precedent on how the body could possibly speak out in Trump’s case. “You can’t read anything in there,” she said.
