Those emotions were close to the surface as Roland Hedgepeth watched the murder suspect make a virtual appearance in a Durham courtroom on Friday morning.
“This is just a new beginning. It’s just started,” Hedgepeth said.
Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares, 28, of Durham, is accused of killing Faith, a 19-year-old UNC student, on September 7, 2012. Salguero-Olivares was reportedly 19 at the time of the murder. Authorities said he was arrested with the help of the SBI on Thursday morning and was charged with first degree murder.
He is being held without bail and has been appointed public defender. He was assigned a probable cause hearing on October 7 on Friday.

Authorities said DNA from the crime scene linked them to the suspect nine years later. But they did not say whether Salguero-Olivares knew Faith Hedgepeth.
The murder suspect’s past remains obscure. A neighbor told ABC11 that Salguero-Olivares had moved from Guatemala.
We know the suspect was a painter. UNC officials told ABC11 on Friday that Salguero-Olivares had never been enrolled there as a student.
A few people who said they knew him were shocked by the allegations and the arrest.

But Hunter Glass, who previously worked on the Hedgepeth case as a private investigator, was less surprised when Salguero-Olivarez was named a suspect in the murder that rocked the community of Chapel Hill.
Glass said the suspect’s name appeared and added that he believed Salguero-Olivares had been at a party in the cul-de-sac of the Hedgepeth apartment complex, but said the suspect was not going out. not the lot – he just seemed like someone who was in the crowd.
“I would like to know why and who else knew,” Glass said. “I don’t believe that a single person knows this matter. And I don’t believe that there were only two and that one couldn’t tell us. So, I think there was. other witnesses, I believe, or not the witnesses, at least heard something, knew something but kept it close to their chest because they didn’t want to talk about it, or they were afraid to be involved in it. “
Chapel Hill Police were not willing to say if there had been a party at the Hedgepeth compound.

Glass said he was happy to hear about the arrest.
“I’m really happy. I mean, I’m still sorry,” Glass said. “Faith was obviously a very beautiful kid and her dad and mom were fantastic, but her dad was a really good man. And, you know, I’m so glad something came out of it and I’m glad Chapel Hill did. never let go. “

When asked how he wanted his daughter to be remembered, Roland Hedgepeth replied:
“As a person, she was, I mean, who she was as a person, not as a young woman who was murdered.”
He said he will always remember her smile and her loving ways.

On September 7, 2012, Faith Hedgepeth, 19, a UNC student, was found dead in her off-campus apartment.
Hedgepeth’s roommate Karena Rosario came home to find Hedgepeth dead. When calling 911, she told an operator there was “blood everywhere”.
The autopsy results concluded that Hedgepeth had been brutally beaten and raped. On the bed next to Hedgepeth’s body was a handwritten note scribbled on a bag from a fast food restaurant. Investigators said they believed the killer wrote the note.
THE NIGHT OF MURDER
The evening started with Hedgepeth and Rosario at the Davis Library on the UNC campus. They returned home just after midnight and left.
They arrived at the Wallace Parking Deck on East Rosemary Street just before 1 a.m. and went to a bar called The Thrill – a Chapel Hill nightclub that has since closed.
Hedgepeth and Rosario left the bar together at 2:38 a.m. and returned to the Old Durham Road apartment in Hedgepeth’s white Nissan Altima. According to police, Rosario left the apartment again at 4:27 am She returned around 11:00 am with a friend and found Hedgepeth’s body.
DNA PROOF
Investigators said they collected a significant amount of DNA from the crime scene. With such strong DNA evidence in the case, investigators collected samples from hundreds of men, but for many years they were unable to find a match.
