Steve Rogers’ version of Captain America often pitted his WWII-era sensibility with patriotism and the military against the modern world. With Walker, the modern military finally has its chance to become a fully militarized Star-Spangled Man. Basically the complete antithesis of Steve Rogers.
“The serviceman of WWII is quite simply very different from the serviceman of the present day. They just work differently; the PR machine works differently. There are a lot more opinions about what the military should be and what their roles in the world should be, ”said Russell. “He’s a bit of a guy who just does his job well. And he’s done this to serve and protect, based on some of the things Steve has done, and he feels like he just wants to do the job, but people aren’t necessarily willing to take him as the person to do it.
Russell describes his role going forward as a giant wrench thrown in Sam and Bucky’s attempts to bring down the Flag Smashers, which leads the two to a reunion this week with Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo.
“It definitely doesn’t make anybody’s life easier,” he said. “You will definitely start to see and understand, hopefully, why John is the way he is and what drives him to do the things that he does.
