Falcons: defensive cut candidates; free agent candidates (part 3)

This is a four-part series about the potential cut candidates who could fall victim to the ceiling and the free agents who could be signed this offseason to replace them. With new Managing Director Terry Fontenot fund of professional staff, free agency could prove more fruitful than the project. The first part was the offensive cuts; the second part was offensive free agents; the third part will be defensive cuts; the fourth part will be that of the defensive free agents.

Now that Dean Pees has been officially named the Defensive Coordinator, we know how much personnel his system demands. If you haven’t already read my Pees diet breakdown, be sure to check it out as these cuts coincide with this item.

Use of tools provided by OverTheCap, the contracts of cut players will give rise to the team’s salary cap.

Allen Bailey, DL

Cap reached in 2021: $ 6,125,000

Allen Bailey would save the Falcons about $ 4,500,000 if he were cut. He was overall unproductive and didn’t play more than half of the team’s defensive shots. You cannot justify paying someone so much money and using so little. Bailey has only registered eight quarter presses all year. Let me name a few others around the NFL who have had eight total quarterback presses; Budda baker (a security), Charles Harris (The Falcons paid him less than $ 2,000,000 in 2020), and Alexander johnson (middle linebacker). But it wasn’t just the wrong play on the pitch; it was also poor effort. Bailey has to go.

Ricardo allen, S

Cap reached in 2021: $ 8,375,000

I’ll say this first; I think Ricardo has had a bad year in 2020, but he would be great for Pees’ defense. He’s smart and versatile enough to fall into deep cover within five yards of the line of scrimmage. I just can’t convince myself he’s worth his 2021 cap, especially when the Falcons can claw back over $ 6 million from his salary. Allen is a great leader with a high character so I don’t want to cut him off. But Atlanta is too restricted to afford it.

Tyeler Davison, DL

Cap reached in 2021: $ 4,663,333

If Tyeler Davison is named as a cut on June 1, the Falcons could save over $ 3 million on his 2021 salary. Terry Fontenot was in New Orleans when they drafted Davison and when they let him walk free arbitrator. I expect Fontenot to know exactly what to do with the run-stopper, who could have been more productive by rushing the passer last season. He totaled four presses in total all year, so he was clearly underperforming.
