Falcons fans are cautiously optimistic about hiring Arthur Smith

Falcons fans have suffered a lot over the past five seasons: unprecedented highs and unimaginable lows. But here we are, looking forward to a brighter future, a future where we don’t get Tom Brady on the list.

The future of the franchise is on hold right now. Whether we are in a rapid resurgence or a long rebuilding remains to be seen. But the decision to hire former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith as the next head coach makes sense and it seems like a step in the right direction. Smith did wonders with the Titan offense, making Ryan Tannehill an above-average quarterback and maximizing Derek Henry’s output. Having said that, we won’t really know if this was a good rental for a year or two, at the earliest. But Smith seems to tick several boxes.

Because at The Falcoholic we care what you think of the activities of this team, we asked you what you think of the rental. (Spoiler alert: most of you are cautiously optimistic.)

Dave “Skinny Jeans” Choate wrote an article asking a similar question after the hiring announcement Friday afternoon, eliciting an almost identical response. (Only 24% of voters were apathetic or against hiring.)

I have to give credit where credit surely goes: Falcons fans are a resilient bunch. You can shoot them ten times, and they will keep getting up. After all of the Falcons-related grief they’ve endured over the past five years, they’re still up to being optimistic about the next step. Smith has a limited, albeit impressive, record. He’s young and respected, which breeds a lot of confidence, but there are no sure things in the NFL. In a perfect world, the cautious optimism of the fan base will be rewarded. Hopefully this is how it goes.

Your thoughts, Falcoholics?
