The first Falcons depth map of the 2021 campaign has been released. This should be seen as unofficial, and for good reason. It may not fully reflect how the units came together in training camp practices, but it can mark a starting point. There’s a lot of preseason left to create some up-and-down movement in the depth chart, so let’s not burn anything just yet.
Note also that there is no rookie currently in the first team. Chances are good, at least one – maybe, you know, a really big tight end – will be there by the time the regular season begins.
All that background aside, let’s take a look at some interesting nuggets from the first unofficial depth chart.
The good tackle spot stays on the move, with Willie Beavers currently at the top of the depth chart at this position. Kaleb McGary sits in second after returning from the physically unable to play roster on Monday, with rookie Jalen Mayfield behind him.
There are also two tight slots in the group. This is a somewhat unusual split for these depth charts, but it makes sense given the strength of the group of positions. Hayden Hurst faces a tight point and Lee Smith sits on top of the other.
Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and Steven Means are the starting rushers at this point, with Dante Fowler behind Means. He returned from the COVID-19 list and just started training on Monday. Head coach Arthur Smith has made it clear that Fowler will have to earn his role.
High school looks like training, with cornerbacks AJ Terrell and Fabian Moreau on the outside and Duron Harmon and Erik Harris on the safe side. The second-round pick is ranked third behind Harris and TJ Green.
