Family confirms Clark County Sheriff’s assistants shot dead 30-year-old black man

The man shot by deputies in the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Thursday night is a 30-year-old black man, his family confirmed to the OPB on Friday.

Jenoah Donald, of Vancouver, was shot dead in the unincorporated community of Hazel Dell, Washington. He remains hospitalized, investigators said on Saturday. The shooting took place less than a mile from where a drug task force killed Kevin Peterson Jr. nearly three months ago.

Donald’s mother, Susan Zawacky, said she knew very little about the events leading up to the shooting of her son, which is being investigated by an independent team under a law d Relatively new condition.

“We’re just not getting answers,” Zawacky said. “I have about as much information as you do.”

“I don’t know how I’m feeling right now, to be honest with you,” Zawacky added later.

Donald remains on life support, according to the Vancouver chapter of the NAACP. On Saturday, the organization issued a statement saying Donald had passed away, but law enforcement issued an update confirming Donald remains hospitalized.

The family demanded that no protests take place, the Vancouver chapter of the NAACP said in its statement. Such protests have taken place regularly in the wake of police killings of black Americans.

“They are in shock and are trying to grieve,” the organization said. “Any public demonstration made at that time would be in direct violation of the family’s wishes.”

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement issued a traffic stop at 7:41 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Northeast 68th Street and Northeast 2nd Avenue. The agency did not give any details about what triggered the interaction.

The shot dead person, according to the press release, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. A GoFundMe for Donald appeared on Friday afternoon to raise funeral costs.

“(Donald’s family) have been told there is nothing more doctors can do,” the fundraiser organizer wrote. “It’s an unexpected tragedy and the family is hoping to raise money to cover the cost of his funeral to put him to rest.

Neither the Clark County Sheriff’s Office nor investigators released any new information on Friday. It is still unclear who the MPs who fired were, how many shots they fired and why the officers made contact with Donald.

Four MPs were involved and one fired his gun, the sheriff’s office said on Saturday.

Neighbors said police remained at the scene late into the night.

Steve Dean, a 70-year-old retiree, said he was watching television in his basement when he heard a gunshot. Then he heard a crash on his wooden fence. When he looked outside he saw sheriff’s marked office vehicles and a car in its fence.

“I could see the fence had been pushed,” he said. Dean said he couldn’t see the driver, only his feet. He said that when he got out, law enforcement officers told him to go home.

Across the street, neighbor Stephanie Bates said she saw nothing, but later learned that a car had driven north through her lawn before crossing Northeast 68th Avenue and colliding with Dean’s fence.

Bates said looking out the window she saw three law enforcement vehicles – none of them appearing to be undercover or undercover.

“The person hadn’t been taken out of the car yet, so they were basically trying to get them out of the car on the stretcher,” she said.

Like Dean, she said law enforcement told her and her family to stay inside.

The shooting comes about three months after deputies from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office shot and killed Kevin Peterson Jr., 21, who was also black, in a botched drug attack, as reported by first reported the OPB.

The investigation into the shooting ended at the end of November and was first made public in installments in December. A criminal review of this case is still ongoing.
