Family members have identified the person fatally shot by Capitol Police in the midst of Wednesday’s violent riot as 35-year-old California woman Ashli Babbitt.
Babbitt’s extended family told the San Diego Union-Tribune that they were basing the identification on images of spectators posted online, but added that no authority had contacted them within hours of the siege.
“No one contacted us,” a family member told the newspaper. “No official answered us, despite the many phone calls.”
Babbitt’s ex-husband Timothy McEntee told the Union-Tribune that the Air Force veteran and CEO of a swimming pool supply company was “a wonderful woman with a big heart and a strong spirit ”.
“I feel absolutely terrible and sick to my stomach about this,” McEntee added in another interview with The Washington Post. “She has never been afraid to say what she thinks and in a certain way [going to the rally] was her way of saying what she was thinking.

CBS News reported that Babbitt was shot dead by an undercover police officer. Three other people also died on Capitol Hill on Wednesday due to medical emergencies, police said. None of the names of the deceased have been officially released.
