ATLANTA (CNN) – Although the Aragonez family is still recovering from a COVID-19 outbreak, they have taken the time to make a public service announcement warning of large family gatherings.
It is the tradition for many families to come together during Thanksgiving and throughout the holiday season. But with the global coronavirus pandemic, these gatherings could turn Thanksgiving dinner into a big-ticket event.
The Aragonez family are now living the consequences of a large family reunion on November 1; 15 members of the Aragonez family, based in Arlington, Texas, have since tested positive for the coronavirus.
All 12 people present at the meeting tested positive for COVID-19, Alexa Aragonez said – four were living at the home and eight were visiting. She said those family members then infected three more, bringing the total to 15.
As an employee of the City of Arlington’s communications and legislative affairs department, Aragonez said, she saw an opportunity to make the family epidemic a teaching moment.
“We know we were wrong because we let our guard down,” she said of her family. “We are not unlike many families.”
Aragonez said they just got comfortable and ended up paying the price.
Although she said her family took many precautions elsewhere, during the large family reunion, they remained inside and were not wearing masks. COVID-19 is more likely to spread indoors than outdoors, according to health officials, who also recommended that people wear masks indoors when surrounded by people who do not live in their household.
At first, the family were skeptical about doing a PSA, Aragonez said, but after persuading, the family figured out what they could do.
“It’s in English and Spanish,” she told CNN. “We have to make sure we communicate in multiple ways, tugging at the hearts of both.”
Her mother, Enriqueta, participated in the PSA while she was hospitalized with pneumonia, which had developed in her lungs.
“We’re doing better,” Alexa Aragonez told CNN. “My family is slowly recovering, but hopefully surely.”
Enriqueta has been released from the hospital but still has symptoms of COVID-19 and is isolating herself from the rest of the family, according to her daughter.
