Family obituary blames unvaccinated people for their mother’s death: “It cost her life”

The Covid death of a fully vaccinated 66-year-old Illinois woman was caused by those who chose not to be vaccinated, her family said in an obituary.

Candace Cay Ayers, originally from Springfield, Illinois, was a mother of two and a grandmother of three. She had been fully vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine in March, but died on September 3 after contracting a breakthrough infection.

“She was predeceased by more than 4,531,799 other people infected with Covid-19,” the obituary said, referring to the death toll from Covid worldwide.

Sending a strong message to those who are not vaccinated, the family blamed Ayers’ death on reluctance to vaccinate.

“She was vaccinated but was infected by others who chose not to be. The cost was his life, ”he added.

Ayers’ family said they caught Covid in July when they went to visit an unvaccinated friend, whose husband had died of Covid.

She was hospitalized as her condition deteriorated and was transferred to the intensive care unit, where she spent her last days on a ventilator before dying of the infection.

“Mum was a fighter… and mum was so angry with people who didn’t get vaccinated and didn’t wear masks,” said her son, Marc Ayers, 36. United States today.

In a Facebook post nearly a month before his mother died, Mr Ayers said their family believed in science and urged people to get vaccinated and follow mask warrants.

“If you can get the vaccine and / or wear a mask but refuse to do so, just know that your selfish actions threaten (sic) the lives of others,” he said.

“We were responsible, we wore masks inside and were so happy to have received a full vaccine so that we could come out of this pandemic and continue with our lives. Unfortunately, some of you accepted the political nature of this crisis and threatened the life of my family, ”he added.

He said both of his parents contracted the Covid during the trip. As her fully vaccinated father recovered, her mother’s condition deteriorated as she had pre-existing rheumatoid arthritis, making her immunocompromised.

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breakthrough infections occur when a person catches Covid at least 14 days after the second dose of vaccination.

Vaccinations have been shown to make the illness less serious for those who are vaccinated and still get sick, while others may not have any symptoms. The risk of infection, hospitalization and death was found to be much lower in vaccinated people compared to unvaccinated people.

A recent CDC study, conducted amid the spread of the Delta variant in the United States and published earlier this month, found that around 46,312 cases, or 8% of total Covid cases between 4 April and July 17 in 13 jurisdictions were revolutionary infections.

“I just wish (unvaccinated people) would read my mom’s story, what we went through as a family and see if that’s something they want to put their loved ones through, because I can probably make sure that’s not the case, ”Mr Ayers said.
