The family of a girl from Florida are demanding that a school resources officer who criticized their 16-year-old daughter be fired for her actions, according to NBC News.
Earlier in the week images of an incident between MP Ethan Fournier and Taylor Bracey, 16, went viral by showing Bracey slamming Fournier to the ground outside Liberty High School in Osceola County, Florida.
Bracey’s head hit the ground during the encounter.
Bracey’s mother Told NBC that her daughter has had headaches, blurred vision and memory loss since the incident. “(We are) just angry and want justice,” said her mother, Jamesha Bracey. Bracey told her mother that she had passed out and her mother said the school was unwilling to tell her what happened at first.
“The person who’s supposed to protect her is the one who brutalized her,” prominent civil rights lawyer Ben Crump said. “It’s a problem especially in the African American community because we often see them using this excessive use of force with our children.”
Crump, who represented the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, recently took on Bracey’s case.
Sheriff Marcos Lopez claimed the girl was not injured during the meeting at a press conference. “From what I understood, it was a disruption of a school function,” Lopez said. “The student was not following legal orders. She went after another student.”
Crump says Lopez’s description of events is wrong and a physical fight never took place. “There was a verbal altercation. Taylor never touched anyone and then this cop does what we see in this video, ”Crump said.
David Bigney, the officer’s lawyer, said that “Unfortunately, sometimes a situation reaches a level where force is justified and necessary” and internet videos like this never tell the whole story. .
Fournier is on paid leave as the investigation has been turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
