Family working to raise awareness of West Nile virus

Stan Mac was a healthy and happy grandfather until he became seriously ill in August 2018. The West Nile virus was eventually diagnosed. According to the control and prevention centers, diseases, Mac was one of the 245 Nebraskians infected last year. Nebraska has had more West Nile infections than any other state. He also had the second highest number of deaths in the country. In 2018, 11 people died. Mac has spent months in a hospital and is currently at the Madonna – Omaha Campus Rehabilitation Hospitals. He has not been home since last summer, when he became ill. Her family wants people to know how bad West Nile can be for those infected. He is organizing an awareness fundraiser Saturday at the MARK in Elkhorn. There will be silent auctions and all proceeds will go to relief efforts after the floods in Nebraska and Iowa. The Mac family fears that an even larger number of people will get infected this year at causes flooding and stagnant water. The Douglas County Department of Health told KETV that he was not sure what to expect with the virus this year and that he was watching the situation closely.
