Fan Fest Observations: A Celebration of Football

– The Panthers trained on their new FieldTurf for the first time since setting it up this summer, but it’s not the first action on the surface.

As part of the NFL’s Play Football Month initiative and the team’s support for local football, the Panthers brought three high school teams to Bank of America Stadium for practice.

Nation Ford High trained here on Tuesday, and Hickory Ridge and West Meck trained here on Wednesday. The teams received autographed balls to present to the offensive and defensive training players of the day, and they also secured tickets to the August 21 preseason game against the Ravens.

– That said, the Panthers were sneaking into the new box.

Running back Christian McCaffrey told our Kristen Balboni during practice that he liked what he had seen from the box so far, but was glad they were slowly getting used to it.

Friday’s practice was not padded and without a lot of contact. A lot of fast guys love a fast track, and once he got used to it, McCaffrey seemed open to change.

“It was good, I liked it,” McCaffrey said afterwards. “It was very new, so a lot of us were careful, but I liked it.”

Safety Jeremy Chinn has said he loves him too, having played on similar ground in college. Chinn said “it’s like a fast surface.”
