Fans shouldn’t be mad about LSU Football’s disappearance on Ryan Nielsen

The prospect of LSU football’s search for a new defensive coordinator to replace Bo Pelini is not great at the moment.

LSU missed his main goal – former Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman – after appearing to be close to hiring him.

Freeman ended up taking the position of defensive coordinator at Notre Dame instead of joining Ed Orgeron’s staff in Baton Rouge.

It wasn’t much of a surprise. Freeman is from the Midwest and has connections to Notre Dame. The Irish were always going to be LSU’s favorites simply because of geography. It was completely out of Coach O’s control.

But what about LSU’s latest miss?

The missing LSU football on Ryan Nielsen is more than understandable

On Monday, it looked like the Tigers finally had their replacement for Pelini.

New Orleans Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen has reportedly “finalized a deal” to become LSU’s new defensive coordinator.

And then things took a turn.

New Orleans reportedly delayed the deal due to language in Nielsen’s contract that essentially allowed the Saints to stop him from going to LSU.

As LSU tried to resolve these issues, Saints assistant head coach / tight ends coach Dan Campbell agreed to become the next Detroit Lions head coach.

Campbell leaving New Orleans gave the Saints the opportunity to give Nielsen a new contract and a new title (he is now the assistant head coach of New Orleans).

There is simply no way LSU can compete with this.

Look, there’s a reason guys are trying to make it to the NFL. It’s because it’s a better job. It’s more about football than recruiting. And it’s a big draw for a lot of guys (especially with the transfer portal becoming a factor, which means teams have to sign their own players).

The search for the Tigers will continue. But just because this research is a mess. Far from there. Things just didn’t work out for very legitimate reasons.

Eventually Orgeron will find the right fit and everything will fall into place.
