Injuries are starting to pile up in the running back, and we had two prominent guys crashing in week 4 with David Montgomery (knee) and Joe Mixon (ankle). Hopefully their replacement options can become potential fantasy starters in the majority of leagues.
Let’s start with Chicago, where Montgomery is expected to miss 4-5 weeks with a sprained knee. That should see Damien Williams (16 percent registered on CBS Sports) being the Bears’ star running back, and he should be the top priority on the waiver thread.
Williams is suffering from a bruised thigh, but he is expected to be fine for week 5 in Las Vegas. And if he starts, consider Williams to be a No. 2 running back in all leagues. It’s worth adding at least 25 percent to your remaining FAAB budget, but you might see Williams going way more than that to a team of runners in need.
We know Williams should have a lot of work to do in place of Montgomery, who has averaged 18.8 total touches per game this year. Williams just made eight carries for 55 yards and one touchdown in Week 4 against Detroit, as well as two catches for 15 yards on two targets.
In case Williams’ thigh injury is an issue, you should plan to add Khalil Herbert (1%) as well with a secondary waiver move. Herbert is worth up to 5 percent of your remaining FAAB.
For the Bengals, Mixon is considered everyday by trainer Zac Taylor, although ESPN has reported that Mixon is week to week with a sprained ankle. Obviously, there is still a chance that Mixon could play in Week 5 against Green Bay. But if he’s out, Samaje Perine (8% of the roster) would likely start, and he’s worth adding in all leagues as the No.2 player on the waiver behind Williams.
Perine could share his playing time with Chris Evans (2% of the roster), who could be working on passing, but there should be enough work to flex Perine against the Packers. Mixon has averaged 22.5 total touches per game this year.
In terms of FAAB, Perine represents up to 15% of your remaining budget. I wouldn’t want to pay too much for Perine in case Mixon plays week 5, but he missed 10 games in 2020 with a foot injury. Evans is worth 1% of your remaining FAAB just to see what role he has in tandem with Perine.
There are other running backs to add in case you can’t get Williams or Perine, including Kenneth Gainwell, Brandon Bolden, Jeremy McNichols, Darrel Williams, Alex Collins, and Jeff Wilson. We’ll cover these guys and more in other posts below, and it should be a busy week on the waiver thread.
Editor’s Note: For this waiver column, we’re only looking at players registered in less than 65% of CBS Sports leagues.

Week 5 Waivers
WAIVER THREAD
Back runners
- Injuries: Christian McCaffrey (hamstrings), David Montgomery (knee), Joe Mixon (ankle), Elijah Mitchell (shoulder), Peyton Barber (foot), Tony Jones (ankle), Giovani Bernard (knee), JaMycal Hasty (ankle) and Rashaad Penny (calf)
- Dropdown list: Ty’Son Williams (91 percent registered), Kenyan Drake (80 percent), Ronald Jones (64 percent) and Mark Ingram (63 percent). Williams could return as the leader of the Ravens at some point this year, but fantasy managers in 10-team or less leagues may move on after Williams was inactive in Week 4 in Denver with Le’Veon Bell joining. the active list. … Drake managed a single carry-over and no catch in Week 4 for the Chargers with Josh Jacobs back. It’s clear Drake won’t have an extended job for the Raiders unless Jacobs and Barber both run out of time. … Jones scored in Week 4 at New England, but he still has seven or fewer total touches in every game this year, with just one reception. He will not have increased the Fantasy value as long as Leonard Fournette is healthy. … Ingram scored 14 PPR points in Week 1 against Jacksonville and has accumulated 10 PPR points in three games since. He’s also combined for just 13 total touches in his last two games against Carolina and Buffalo.
- Check if available: JD McKissic (73 percent enrolled), Latavius Murray (71 percent) and AJ Dillon (65 percent). McKissic has scored at least 16 PPR points in two of his last three games, and he’s worth using as a flexible option in PPR most weeks, including Week 5 against the Saints. … Murray is now the leading running back in Baltimore after completing 18 races in Week 4 in Denver. He only managed 59 rushing yards, but he scored a touchdown for the third time in four games. Murray will be a weekly flex if he continues to get that kind of work, his value being higher in non-PPR leagues. … Dillon is a lottery ticket in case something happens to Aaron Jones. And Dillon just had 16 total touches, a season-high, in Week 4 against Pittsburgh and finished with 96 total yards, so more work could come in tandem with Jones.
- Injuries: Teddy Bridgewater (concussion), Jimmy Garoppolo (calf), Tua Tagovailoa (ribs), Ryan Fitzpatrick (hip), Tyrod Taylor (hamstrings) and Andy Dalton (knee)
- Drops: Baker Mayfield (70 percent registered) and Justin Fields (63 percent). Mayfield is yet to surpass 19 Fantasy Points in any game this year. … Fields has nine fantasy points in two starts and is about to be benched for Dalton when he is healthy. Fields are only worth holding in the Leagues of Guardians and Dynasties.
- Check if available: Sam Darnold (71 percent registered) and Trevor Lawrence (69 percent). Darnold has scored at least 21 fantasy points in every game this season, including at least 25 points in each of his last two games. He also had five touchdowns that year. … Lawrence is worth a flyer this week against the Titans, who have allowed three quarters to score at least 21 Fantasy points in four outings.

Wide receivers
- Injuries: Amari Cooper (hamstrings), DK Metcalf (foot), AJ Brown (hamstrings), Julio Jones (hamstrings), Tee Higgins (shoulder), Chase Claypool (hamstrings), DJ Chark (ankle), Will Fuller (finger), Sterling Shepard (hamstrings), Darius Slayton (hamstrings), Jerry Jeudy (ankle), Jarvis Landry (knee), Michael Gallup (calf), Elijah Moore (concussion), TY Hilton ( neck), Russell Gage (ankle), Tyrell Williams (concussion)) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (hamstrings).
- Check if available: Check if available: Henry Ruggs (79 percent enrolled), Shepard (74 percent) and Jakobi Meyers (70 percent). Ruggs suffered a loss in Week 4 to the Chargers with three catches for 60 yards on six targets, but he still has at least six targets in each of his last three games. He’s going to win you over for a few weeks, and I want to hide him on my bench for when the clashes are good. … Shepard will hopefully come back from his hamstring injury soon, and I will add him to all available leagues. Before getting injured in Week 3, he had at least 18 PPR points in each of his first two games. … Meyers would be the # 1 receiver to add to the PPR leagues when available, and he has at least 12 targets and 16 PPR points in two straight games heading into Week 5. Mac Jones continues to s ‘press Meyers, and it’s worth it. from PPR to go ahead.
- Drops: JuJu Smith-Schuster (93 percent enrolled), Brandon Aiyuk (89 percent), DJ Chark (85 percent), Will Fuller (81 percent), Jarvis Landry (68 percent) and Mecole Hardman (51 percent) . Smith-Schuster and Aiyuk are only expected to be eliminated in leagues with 10 or fewer teams, but it was clearly a disappointing start for both receivers. Smith-Schuster is under 53 receiving yards in every game this season, has three games with four catches or fewer and is yet to catch a touchdown. Aiyuk has three games with a catch or less and has yet to total 37 receiving yards on an outing with a touchdown. … Chark, Fuller, and Landry aren’t worth holding back while they’re injured, unless you have an IR spot, and Chark is likely out for the season. … Hardman might never be a consistent fantasy producer, and with Josh Gordon now joining the Chiefs, things could get worse, so it’s easy to let him go.
Wide receiver
Priority list for week 5
- Injuries: George Kittle (calf), Rob Gronkowski (ribs), Logan Thomas (hamstrings), Tyler Higbee (ankle) and Gerald Everett (illness)
- Check if available: Mike Gesicki (76 percent enrolled), Dalton Schultz (72 percent) and Jared Cook (67 percent). In the last two games with Brissett leaving, Gesicki had 18 targets, 15 catches, 143 yards and one touchdown, and he’s scored at least 16 PPR points on those outings. Hopefully this continues when Tagovailoa returns, as well as when Fuller is in good health. … Schultz should be considered a go-to tight end right now as he has at least 17 PPR points in two straight games, and he’s got three games this season with at least six targets and six catches. He’s got 15 targets in his last two outings, and it’s nice to see Dak Prescott leaning on him. … Cook did well Monday night with six catches for 70 yards and one touchdown on seven targets. He now has two games with at least seven targets over the year and is expected to be a low-end starter in most leagues.
- Drops: Robert Tonyan (69 percent enrolled), Austin Hooper (46 percent) and Evan Engram (43 percent). Tonyan is going to score touchdowns, but he’s only got one in the season and three or fewer catches in every game. You can find a streamer who does more, so this is someone to consider ditching. … Hooper has one touchdown on the season and four straight games with nine PPR points or less. There is little reason to hold on to him now. … Engram has six targets in his two games this season, but he has only accumulated nine PPR points. The Giants’ receiving corps is overcrowded when in good health, and Engram will likely struggle to achieve consistent production.
