Far Cry 6 on Xbox has only 700MB on disk

With Far Cry 6 out in the wild, news broke about the physical release of the Xbox version. Reddit user Rpgfan10 posted an image of the Far Cry 6 install screen, which only noted 753.37MB of data on the disk. The remaining 68.51 GB of game data is installed via a network update.

This is not the first time that we have seen this kind of situation with physical exits. The Spyro Reignited trilogy sadly only contained the first game on disc, requiring an internet connection to fully install the rest of the games despite a delay that was supposed to show the titles extra love.

There are also plenty of Nintendo Switch titles that launch on lower capacity cartridges to save on distribution costs, requiring internet-connected facilities for the full game.

These scenarios present a worrying sign for the preservation of game. In the future, when some of these Internet services and infrastructures fail, these discs will no longer be playable. A consumer buying a physical copy of Far Cry 6 25 years from now when it’s retro, for example, won’t be able to play it. However, now someone could add their original copy of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and it works.
