Fast Share, the Google AirDrop alternative, introduces new features and a new user interface

Android phones have been offering a way to share files with Android Beam for years, but the process was slow and tedious. It's probably for this reason that you do not use it or that you did not even know it existed, and also why Google ended the support of Beam with Android 10.

Do not worry, because Google is also working on a replacement called Fast Share. Just like his name, Fast Share is supposed to be something that Beam was not – quickly. To do this, it uses Bluetooth to search for devices and Wi-Fi to perform the file transfer. For comparison, Android Beam used Bluetooth to move bits and bytes.

In June, we had a first glimpse of Fast Share, but now we dive even deeper thanks to people from XDA developers. The new screenshots show that Google has made a lot of progress over the past two months and has reorganized the design.

New features, such as an account switch and a PIN for file transfers, have been added, while settings have been moved from the Google Account menu to the Android login menu. Fast Share has also added a new sharing sheet that allows you to name your device and set a visibility level for sharing.

In addition to all feature enhancements, the design has also been updated. In the first iteration, Fast Share takes care of the whole screen, but that's no longer the case. The new screenshots show a much more refined user interface that shows only a superposition at the bottom.

Unfortunately, Fast Share is not yet operational, but we can get a glimpse of how the sharing process works. For example, we can see a list of dummy devices as targets when you try to share, including a Chromebook, Pixel 3, a Wear OS smartwatch, and even an iPhone.

It is not certain that all these devices will be supported during the launch of Fast Share, especially the iPhone, but we are eager to know. Hopefully Google will launch Fast Share soon. It is expected that a very big Pixel event will take place in October and that this would be the right time to unveil new features. I'm just saying.
