Dr Anthony Fauci faces backlash after insisting it was “too early” to say whether the COVID-19 pandemic would disrupt this year’s Christmas gatherings.

In an interview on Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation”, the White House’s chief medical adviser was asked if groups could come together to celebrate the holiday.

” It is too early to tell. We need to focus on keeping those numbers down and not trying to move forward weeks or months and say what we’re going to do at some point, ”Fauci said.

But his response was criticized by Republican leaders, who called him a “scrooge”.

“I don’t think anyone is going to listen to Scrooge Fauci. I know I won’t be, ”Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) wrote on Twitter.

Representative Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) added: “No one elected Fauci to be the Christmas Czar.”

Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY) also lambasted the country’s top infectious disease expert.

Fauci urged Americans last year to skip their vacation meetings in the hopes they could reunite safely in 2021.

“To my own family, I say we had a really good Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. We look forward to a very good Thanksgiving and Christmas in 2021, ”Fauci told USA Today at the time. “Now let’s make the best of the situation and show our love and affection for people by protecting them. “
