“[W]What happens is you could get infected and have absolutely no symptoms, not know you are infected, and then inadvertently get into a situation with vulnerable people. And if you don’t have a mask, you could inadvertently infect them, ”he said, adding that there was a“ small risk ”of such a situation happening.

“[W]When you get vaccinated, you significantly reduce your risk of getting infected. This is one of the things we have to make sure everyone understands. You decrease it considerably, ”added Fauci.

Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommend that vaccinated Americans continue to wear masks in public, although the agency says vaccinated people meeting exclusively with other people who have received the vaccine may do it safely without a mask. It is also not recommended to attend “medium or large gatherings” with or without a mask.

“We are still learning how vaccines will affect the spread of COVID-19. Once you’ve been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you should continue to take precautions, such as wearing a mask, staying six feet from each other, and avoiding crowds. and poorly ventilated spaces – in public places until we know more, ”the CDC said in the guidelines.
