FBI agents killed in Florida: suspect allegedly used doorbell camera and assault rifle through closed door

Details continue to emerge of the fatal FBI raid in Sunrise, Florida, which left two people dead and three others injured and the suspect allegedly committed suicide – the agency’s deadliest day since 9/11.

As the flags at the FBI Miami field office remained lowered to mid-staff on Wednesday, a new report said the suspect used a doorbell camera and allegedly shot officers through the door.

The suspect, who was not immediately named by authorities, allegedly set up a camera on his doorbell and used it to monitor officers as they approached his home, two anonymous law enforcement officials said at the Miami Herald. The gunman then allegedly fired through the unopened door at officers coming in using an assault rifle, leaving the door riddled with bullet holes, according to the report.

James Marshall, a spokesman for the FBI Miami field office, declined to comment on the details of the raid to Fox News on Wednesday.

The Herald also reported that the shooter appeared to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Five officers were hit by gunfire, resulting in the death of two officers and three “injuries of varying severity,” FBI Miami Special Agent in charge, George Piro, said in a statement Tuesday.

Piro said the suspect would not be identified until his family was notified.

A preliminary investigation led federal officials to believe the suspect was shot and killed, another unnamed law enforcement official told The Associated Press, warning that an official cause of death has not not yet determined. This person spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

FBI Director Christopher Wray identified the two agents killed as Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger, both of whom specialize in investigating crimes against children.

Marshall told Fox News on Wednesday that the office is not providing updates at this time on the two officers who were rushed to hospital on Tuesday, each suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He also declined to comment further on when the suspect’s name was due to be released.

Wray confirmed in his statement Tuesday night that the two officers are now in stable condition. The third injured officer did not require hospitalization and was treated at the scene.

The suspect opened fire when officers came to serve a federal warrant in a case of child pornography and violent crimes against children, according to Miami FBI agent Michael D. Leverock and president of the United States. ‘Association of FBI Agents, Brian O’Hare. The office has not released additional information on the case against the now deceased man.

The shooting took place at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday in a middle-class neighborhood of single-family homes, duplexes and apartment buildings west of Fort Lauderdale, near the Everglades.

The shots erupted with about four shots – “Boom, boom, boom, boom!” Julius McLymont, whose house borders the Water Terrace apartment complex where the suspect was barricaded, told the AP.

At first McLymont said he thought the shot was a car turning on him, then 2 minutes later he heard five more shots.

He said he got out and looked over his fence as police cars and ambulances rushed. Then he saw officers working on someone lying on the ground before loading the person into an ambulance.

A SWAT team then appeared, he said, with officers wearing riot gear. Then they walked around the building shouting “Come on, come on, come on!” according to McLymont. He said he couldn’t see the apartment where the shooting took place from his location. Hours later, Sunrise Police urged residents of Water Terrace to stay in their homes while law enforcement blocked entrances to their community.

Injured FBI agents

Alfin, 36, who had been an FBI special agent since 2009, was recently involved in a case against a Miami mayor’s aide who was accused of luring a teenage victim to city hall under the guise of an interview, then kiss and stroke him during the meeting. René Pedrosa, who initially faced state charges which were later dropped on federal charges filed in March 2020, also reportedly sent obscene photos to his victim.

Alfin has also been involved in an FBI hack campaign to expose child pornography circulating on the dark website, Playpen. The investigation subsequently brought down the site’s founder, Steven Chase, sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2017.

Schwartzenberger, 43, an FBI agent since 2005, has also worked on child exploitation investigations, many of which involved Internet child pornography. She was also active in the community, visiting colleges to teach students about the dangers of online predators.

After Tuesday’s shooting, police motorcycles with their flashing lights escorted a fire truck as it brought the body of one of the officers to the medical examiner’s office near Dania Beach. Law enforcement officials from many agencies lined up to pay their respects to the flag-covered body that was removed from the vehicle and taken inside.

There have been several other shootings in FBI history in which agents have died, according to the office’s Wall of Honor.

In South Florida, the infamous “Miami Shootout” in 1986 claimed the lives of officers Ben Grogan and Jerry Dove in a shootout with two heavily armed robbery suspects who were also killed. Five other FBI agents were injured in the shooting, which led to the office improving the weapons agents carry.

The FBI Miami field office bears the names of these two slain agents.
