Federal government is investigating whether a Pennsylvania woman who was seen in video participating in the U.S. Capitol Riots stole a laptop or hard drive from House of Commons Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and planned to sell it to the Russians, officials said.
The FBI is looking for Riley June Williams on charges such as entering a restricted building, disrupting orderly government conduct, and disorderly or disruptive conduct.
There is no indication that a laptop was stolen from the president’s office and the agency said in an affidavit that “the matter is still under investigation.”
“It looks like WILLIAMS ran away,” the affidavit said. “According to local law enforcement in Harrisburg, WILLIAMS ‘mother said WILLIAMS packed a bag and left her home and told her mother she would be gone for a few weeks.
“WILLIAMS did not provide his mother with any information about his intended destination,” he added.
A witness described as Williams’ former romantic partner claimed to have seen footage of her “picking up a laptop or hard drive in President Pelosi’s office.”
“[Witness 1] stated that WILLIAMS intended to send the computing device to a friend in Russia, who was then considering selling the device to SVR, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, ”an agent said.
“According to [Witness 1], the transfer of the computing device to Russia failed for unknown reasons and WILLIAMS still has the computing device or destroyed it, ”according to the affidavit, which includes a link to a documentary produced by ITV News, based in London.
A woman identified as Williams – wearing glasses, a green shirt and a brown trench coat and carrying a bag over her shoulder – can be seen shouting “upstairs, upstairs, upstairs” , pushing people towards Pelosi’s office, according to NPR.
The show singles out the woman, saying she was “disciplined, focused, with a sense of urgency, leading people up a staircase.”
On January 16, William’s mother told authorities “that a British media team had come to her house the day before to ask to speak to WILLIAMS, who was not present,” the affidavit said.
“The news team presented WILLIAMS ‘mother with one or more images taken at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. Her mother acknowledged that it was WILLIAMS in the image,” the affidavit states.
“It looks like WILLIAMS has fled,” he added.
Williams has not been charged with theft.
