COUNTY BRAZOS, Tex. (KBTX) – The Federal Communications Commission warns consumers against fraudulent automated calls that, according to officials, target specific regional burst codes.
The calls come mainly from the area codes "222" and "232" which come from the countries of West Africa, Mauritania and Sierra Leone.
In a press release, the FCC advises not to call back these numbers; calls often result in toll charges per minute.
The FCC claims that the call is a scam "A ringtone", which occurs when a robotic caller calls a number and hangs up after a ring or two. They can call again and again, hoping that you call back and pay a toll that is mainly paid to the rogue.
The FCC has published the following tips:
• Do not remember numbers that you do not recognize, especially those that appear to be coming from abroad.
• File a complaint with the FCC if you received these calls
• If you never make international calls, consider contacting your telephone company to block outgoing international calls in order to avoid accidental long distance calls.
• Check charges on your phone bill that you do not recognize

• If you are charged for a call made as a result of this scam, first try to resolve the problem with your phone company. If you can not resolve it directly, you can file a complaint with the FCC at no cost.
