The Federal Communications Commission warns the public against a rematch scam that usually occurs in the middle of the night.
The "One Ring" swindle calls for specific area codes in bursts, often calling several times in the middle of the night to try to have the number called back by people. If people return, the call may result in a minute toll charges similar to those of a 900 number.
Popular "One Ring" calls have been reported in New York State and Arizona.
Most fraudulent calls use the "222" area code, which represents Mauritania, a country in West Africa, but the FCC warns users not to call back the numbers that they have. they do not recognize.
Other advice provided by the FCC includes:
- Do not remember numbers that you do not recognize, especially those that seem to come from abroad.
- File a complaint with the FCC if you received these calls.
