FDA Expands Recall of Sportmix from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after 70 Animals Kill

NEW YORK – The FDA is expanding the recall of dry pet food after more than 70 pets died and dozens more became ill.

Pet food maker Sportmix first recalled certain products last month after finding they could contain deadly levels of one type of mold.

On Monday, the FDA said it was aware of more than 70 pets that have died and more than 80 that have become ill after eating Sportmix pet food.

The FDA says not all of the cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning by lab tests or a review of veterinary records.

But now, the company is adding products containing corn to the recall list.

Some of the symptoms reported include fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, and diarrhea. In some cases, animals may suffer from liver damage but do not show other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop feeding the recalled products to their pets and consult their veterinarian, especially if their pet shows signs of illness.
