Federal health officials are warning people not to drink Real Water brand alkaline water because the product may be linked to liver disease in five Las Vegas-area children.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said five cases of acute non-viral hepatitis leading to acute liver failure in infants and young children were reported in November 2020 in the Southern Nevada Health District. Patients from four different households were all hospitalized, but have since recovered.

Health officials say they have all consumed the brand of alkaline water, the only common link identified between the five cases to date.
“We advise consumers, restaurants and retailers not to consume, cook with, sell or serve ‘Real Water’ alkaline water until more information is known about the cause of the diseases,” Frank Yiannas, deputy commissioner for food policy and response to the FDA, said in a declaration.
“We are working to determine how alkaline water may be linked to disease. Although the investigation is ongoing, epidemiological information currently indicates that this alkaline water product may be the cause of illness, ”Yiannas said.
Other people in the patient’s households also reported experiencing milder symptoms such as fever, vomiting, nausea, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Non-viral hepatitis is inflammation of the liver that can cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.
The Las Vegas-based bottled water brand said on Wednesday it was taking proactive steps to stop selling and distributing the product across the United States until the issue was resolved.
“Our goal is to work diligently with the FDA to achieve an early resolution,” Real Water said in a declaration.
“Real Water is asking all retailers to remove product from the shelf, effective immediately, and keep it behind the scenes or return it to distributors.”
A family has taken civil action against the company, claiming that a father and son fell seriously ill after drinking Real Water. Christopher Wren and his 2-year-old son last year suffered severe liver damage and had to be hospitalized, according to The Las Vegas Journal-Review. The child’s mother also fell ill but did not require hospitalization, and a girl who did not drink water did not get sick.
