SANTA BARBARA, Calif .– A pet cat believed to have been killed along with its owner in a massive landslide was found three years later.
The Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter Assistance Program said the calico named Patches was brought in as a stray animal last month and a microchip revealed its identity.
Patches have been missing since January 9, 2018, when a rainstorm over the Thomas Fire’s vast burn scar sent a debris-laden torrent crashing into the hillside neighborhoods of Montecito, northwest of Los Angeles.
Twenty-three people were killed, including cat owner Josie Gower. The devastation of the debris flow was so terrible that the bodies of two victims were never found.
Shelter ASAP says Patches was found less than a quarter-mile from where her home was in Montecito.
She reunited with Gower’s partner, Norm Borgatello, on New Years Eve.
“While we don’t know exactly what she’s been doing with her life for the past three years, we can see that Patches and Norm are thrilled to be reunited,” the shelter said in a Facebook post.
A live ceremony in memory of the 23 victims was held last week to mark the third anniversary of what has come to be known as “1/9 Debris Flow”.
