LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – With a number of Nebraska pharmacies participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, starting Monday, March 29, these entities will be able to immunize residents 18 years of age and older. These sites are all publicly accessible and still immunize individuals in the current priority phase, 2A to include those 65 and over, as well as essential frontline workers in healthcare, EMS, first responders, teachers. Kindergarten to 12th law enforcement, child care workers, food and agriculture workers, and corrections officers / employees.

Doses available at pharmacies are in addition to the state’s weekly allowance for the first and second doses administered by the 19 local health departments in Nebraska. Parts of the state are already vaccinating young ages and may reduce the age to ensure schedules stay full. Changes to State Directed Health Measures (DHM) that take effect Monday, March 29 at midnight include the following changes to Federal Retail Pharmacy program requirements:

  • By removing the target age groups and criteria for critical infrastructure workers, the criteria for retail pharmacy program partners will be adjusted to allow them to immunize anyone 18 years of age and older.
  • Removal of the requirement for retail pharmacy program partners to coordinate planning with their respective local health departments and use the state-designated COVID-19 vaccine registration and planning system.

Opening the age range for this program allows Nebraskans to visit a pharmacy anywhere, regardless of jurisdiction, and speeds up vaccination efforts statewide. For example, if a resident of a district wants to make an appointment for vaccination in another county that has availability, they can. Those interested in getting the vaccine should check with surrounding pharmacies for planning capacity as allocations and availability may differ depending on demand.

Walmart, Kohll’s, and Hy-Vee are among the pharmacies in Nebraska that currently have public scheduling portals. Individuals can also register on the state website, at Vaccinate.Ne.Gov. Registering a COVID-19 vaccine allows individuals to receive immunization updates, planning information and follow-up reminders, as supplies are available in their area. Pharmacies should coordinate with their local health department to ensure that doses are distributed appropriately to currently eligible populations, as supplies become available.

DHHS continues to share information on COVID-19 and vaccines through its coronavirus website, as well as Facebook and Twitter. The DHHS COVID-19 Information Line is available to answer questions about COVID-19 or vaccination. Available by calling (531) 249-1873 or (833) 998-2275, the line is open daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PT. Relay calls for the deaf and hard of hearing and access to the language line are available.
