Cape Town – S & he admits that he is no longer the favorite to win the Grand Slam as he has been, Roger Federer insists that he is always confident of adding to his major track record.
Aged 38, the 38-year-old has not won a Grand Slam since the Australian Open more than 18 months ago, although he nearly landed a ninth title at Wimbledon earlier this summer.
And although he expects another tough challenge at the US Open next week, he warned it would be foolish to fire him.
"I know it's going to be difficult," Federer told the media in New York on Friday.
"I do not come like the big favorite like in 2006 or 2007. I know very well that I must approach this tournament mentally.
"It will be a hard tournament to win, no doubt. I feel like I'm part of this group who can do it.
"What I'm very proud of is that I had a very consistent year in the year and a half since I ended up back in Montreal. [in 2017]. "
Federer has not played much since his defeat against Novak Djokovic, who won a brilliant final at Wimbledon, but he has confidence in him despite his performance.
"I think the victory over Rafa [Nadal] in the [Wimbledon] the seedlings were big for me. In addition, the final, the way I played it, will give me extra confidence, "he said.
Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are the undisputed favorites to decide the title's destination. Federer admits that it's hard to find other realistic contenders.
