Federal investigators on Wednesday burned the captain, the surviving crew members and the owner of the scuba diving boat that caught fire and sank south of California, killing 34 people.
Detailed interrogation took place for several hours, with the federal government still trying to understand the tragedy that occurred early Monday morning near the island of Santa Cruz, according to Jennifer Homendy of the National Transportation Safety Board.
Homendy refused to disclose the details of the interviews.
The captain and four crew members aboard the bridge were the only ones to have survived when the 75-foot vessel – called Conception – had sunk during a three-day dive excursion.
All other passengers were asleep under the bridge and trapped when the fire broke out, officials said.
The crew members also underwent alcohol and drug testing, Homendy said. The results of the alcohol tests have become negative, while the results of the drug tests are still pending.
The fire protection systems of the convicted boat will also be checked, officials said.
