Felepe Franks lost count of how many tattoos he has. He wears a paw print on his finger for his dog, the manuscript is here on his ribs, a tattoo on his wrist and chest, but one of his biggest pieces is a lion on his left shoulder.
"When I look at animals, I prefer to be a lion than a cat," Franks said Monday. "Do you know what I mean?" The alpha dog that comes to mind when I see or hear an alpha dog, just a lion, somebody who is relentless. perseveres with all that throws on them (someone) who will not go out without a fight.Someone who likes to win in everything he does in life – not even in football but in life. "
Franks' introduction to Gator Nation was not great and he had to fight for everything he had now. Jim McElwain, described as a quarterback whisperer, seduced by his armament and his shell for the arm. He put Franks into action before he was ready to face a Michigan team licking himself against a freshman.
This season was as bad on the field as on the field and when Dan Mullen came, the question was, "Can you fix Feleipe Franks?"
The first season with Mullen was a mixed bag to start. Franks was good against Charleston Southern but not against Kentucky. He has only completed 52% of his passing attempts against Colorado State and Tennessee in the coming weeks before a good performance against Mississippi State. The season continued but Franks was almost eliminated after defeats against Georgia and Missouri two weeks in a row. Only until the South Carolina match, not even the whole match – just in the second half – did Franks cross a course.
He lit up all the teams until the end and he found himself somewhere along the way.
Dan Mullen says he is looking for an alpha dog but was not ready to congratulate Frank for the moment. "I have a bar high enough for that," Mullen said.
Franks did not sit down and rest on the last month of the season as "I told you". He brought this mentality and a new confidence in him. Lamical Perine told reporters at SEC Media Days that Franks was one of the first players on the ground or in the weight room and that he was still one of the last two parties. The Franks gathered the receivers at all hours of the night and passed the passes under the lights of the Florida Indoor Practice Center.
This seems to be an alpha dog mentality.
"I think it's a bit of both. I've always thought of myself as an alpha dog, but at the same time, I think it's something that you acquire more and more as confidence grows, "Franks said. "I think it's a bit of both."
He has always trusted himself and his abilities, but until this hard work translates into success on the field, you are never really confident. Franks took it and he was inspired by it. He spent more time on the pitch alone and with his teammates than ever before. He has mastered the game book, he will not stay long to watch the touchline this season. He owns this offense and Mullen knows it. Franks has the green light to hear and check Mullen's offensive calls if he sees anything in a predefined reading. It takes a coach a lot of confidence to give that kind of energy to a quarterback, but Mullen knows that Franks deserved it.
"I think he's already improved more during the off season than during last season on the field," said Mullen about Franks. "In his performances and his understanding of the system, the decision-making and the staging. That's the big picture of the quarterback. It's every intangible that comes with that. How do you handle the game? Your decision making, your leadership, your mental and physical strength. These are all aspects of the quarterback situation that, in my opinion, does much more than complete a higher percentage of his passes. I saw him doing everything on the ground at a much higher level. "
It is the year that Franks really shines. This is his third year of play and the second in Dan Mullen's friendly quarterback system.
He has always been a competitor since day one, "said Hammond. "He went through so much. He always kept his cool and continued to push, continued to push and continued to push. He found his way to the top.
The route taken by Franks to get to this point was not easy. There were pitfalls and crowds on Twitter asking him to transfer. Doubts have been expressed both inside and out, but he has overcome everything and it is his year to show it.
