BOSTON, Mass. – Actress Felicity Huffman is expected to know her fate on Friday in the Boston Federal Court, where she will be sentenced for her role in the university admissions scandal that rocked the nation.
Prosecutors want mother of two to spend a month in jail and fined $ 20,000, while her lawyers urge a judge to sentence her to probation, a $ 20,000 fine and 250 hours of work of general interest.
She will be the first convicted parent in what the federal government has dubbed the biggest admission scam ever: about 50 parents, coaches, and test administrators across the country.
Huffman admitted earlier this year to have paid $ 15,000 to William "Rick" Singer, the admissions reporter, to inflate his eldest son's SAT scores. In May, she pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud and honest service fraud.
Her husband, actor William H. Macy, has not been charged, although Eva Longoria and her former cast member have written letters to support Huffman.
In a letter to the judge last week, the 56-year-old actress herself stated that she found motherhood "confusing" and that she was "haunted" by her decision to recruit Singer.
"In my desperation of being a good mother, I persuaded myself that all I was doing was giving my daughter a fair shot," she wrote.
However, prosecutors want her to do it for at least some time, claiming that her conduct was "deliberate and clearly criminal."
His sentence is scheduled for 14:30.
